Poem

Nelson, My Dog
by Gary Soto
Like the cat he scratches the flea camping in fur.
Unlike the cat he delights in water up to his ears.
He frolics. He catches a crooked stick –
On his back he naps with legs straight up in the air.
Nelson shudders awake. He responds to love
From head to tail. In happiness
His front legs march in place
And his back legs spark when they push off.
On a leash he knows his geography.
For your sake he looks both ways before crossing,
He sniffs at the sight of a poodle trimmed like a hedge,
And he trots the street with you second in command.
In the park, he ponders a squirrel attached to a tree
And he shovels a paper cup on his nose.
He sweeps after himself with his tail,
And there is no hand that doesn't deserve a lick.
Note this now, my friends:
Nelson can account the heritage of heroic dogs:
One, canines lead the blind,
Two, they enter fire to rescue the child and the child's toy,
Three, they swim for the drowning,
Four, they spring at the thief,
Five, they paddle ponds for the ball that got away,
Six, for the elderly they walk side by side to the very end,
Seven, they search for bones but stop when called,
Eight, they bring mud to all parties,
Nine, they poke among the ruins of a burnt house,
Ten, they forgive what you dish out on a plate.

Nelson is a companion, this much we know,
And if he were a movie star, he would do his own stunts –
O, how he would fly, climb the pant legs of a scoundrel
And stand tall rafting on white-water rivers!
He has befriended the kingdom of animals:
He once ran with wolves but admittedly not very far,
He stepped two paces into a cave and peeked at the bear,
He sheltered a kitten,
He righted the turtle pedaling its stumps on its back,
Under the wheeling stars he caravanned with the mule,
He steered sheep over a hill,
He wisely let the skunk pass,
He growled at the long-bearded miser,
He joined ducks quacking with laughter,
Once he leaped at a pheasant but later whined from guilt.

I really liked this poem because it is about a dog. Many of the actions listed above really describe my dog and how he acts, so I can really relate to it.

My Success

I am currently 57 years old. For about 20 years I was the Head Coach of the New Jersey Nets. Just recently I retired and bought a small island off of the coast of Florida. I now live on my island with my wife and two kids. We have three dogs, two of which being labrador retrievers. Now I enjoy my days eating great meals made by my wife, and enjoying the beautiful tropical weather of Southern Florida. Oh by the way my brother John cured cancer.

Inanimate object

The strong smell stings my nostrils. It's spicy sauce coats my tongue causing each taste bud to scream in pain. The flaming red sauce burns right through my pupils.

True vision

The short story "Cathedral" really showed that  eyesight does not necessarily mean true vision of the world. In the short story a blind man ends up teaching a man with sight the true meaning of having vision. This blind man although has no vision, had visited and seen more of the world than the man with sight. The man with sight would just sit in his home and miss out on the beauties of the world. This blind man showed even though he has a disability he is still a more well rounded person overall.
The blind man helps the able man when he makes him draw with him. Even though the the man has his sight, the blind man has to help him create the a drawing of a cathedral. The able man is unable to do this because he never took the time to look at a cathedral. This short story just shows that even if you have sight, you might not be using it to its full capabilities.

"Bad" Secret

Have you ever lost sleep over a secret you were keeping? I know from experience keeping secrets is not pleasant. The guilt that comes with secrets is very hard to beat and causes you to tell the truth. One time I kept a secret, the guilt kept eating away at me causing me to lose hours of sleep. Finally I couldn't take the guilt anymore and I told my friend the secret. Now I try to avoid secrets any time they approach me. I realized the best solution is not to keep information from anybody.

New Years Resolution

My New Years resolution is to be nicer to my family mainly my mother.  I feel recently, I have been very disrespectful to my mother. She really doesn't deserve how I treat her. This is why I am ready to make a change. I will accomplish this resolution by making sure I always talk to her without an attitude. I will not talk back to her or argue with her over menial issues.

Snow Poem

Snowball
by Shel Silverstein

I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I'd keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head
Then last night it ran away,
But first- it wet the bed.
